Healing Goddesses

Airmed (Celtic)

Airmed was known for her prowess in healing those who fell in battle. It is said that the world’s healing herbs sprouted from Airmed’s tears as she wept over her fallen brother’s body. She is known in Irish legend as the keeper of the mysteries of herbalism.

Aja is said to be the spirit who taught all other healers their craft. She is a mighty Orisha, and it is is believed that if she carries you away but allows you to return after a few days, you will be blessed with her powerful magic.

She is called upon often in women’s laments, but little is known about her other than her association with healing magic.

Isis (Egyptian)

Although Isis’ main focus is more magic than healing, she does have a strong connection to healing because of her ability to resurrect Osiris, her brother and husband, from the dead following his murder by Set. She is also a goddess of fertility and motherhood.

Panacaea (Greek)

Daughter of Asclepius and sister of Hygieia, Panacaea was a goddess of healing by way of curative medicine. Her name gives us the word panacaea, which refers to a cure-all for disease. She was said to carry a magic potion, which she used to heal people with any illness at all.

Healing

beauty-is-in-the-spirit-of-everythingHealing is the restoration of oneself, be it physical, emotional, spiritual or mental. Physically it can refer to a wound (in some religions it can mean the resurrection of our bodies). In this part of healing i’ll be writing about Spiritual Healing.

All conditions can be treated by spiritual healing – but not all people. Spiritual healing can help people in different ways, sometimes unexpectedly. Healing may cure someone or may not, but may instead help them to deal with the condition they have and to become more positive. Personally spiritual healing has helped me deal with a lot of feelings and mental health (anxiety). It has helped me deal with some fears and past issues. Spiritual healing not only heals the spirit but the body and mind too.

The Mother Goddess

image

The Mother Goddess, wherever she is found, is an image that inspires and focuses a perception of the universe as an organic, sacred and indivisible whole, in which humanity, the Earth and all life on Earth participate as ‘her children’. Everything is woven together in one cosmic web, where all orders of manifest and unmanifest life are related, because all share in the sanctity of the original source.
—– However, it was evident that in our present secular age the goddess myth is nowhere to be found. Of course, in the Catholic version of Christianity, Mary, ‘the Virgin’, ‘Queen of Heaven’, is clothed in all the old goddess images – except that, significantly, she is not ‘Queen of Earth’. The Earth used to have, as it were, a goddess to call her own, because the Earth and all creation were of the same substance as the Goddess. Earth was her epiphany: the divine was immanent as creation. Our mythic image of Earth has lost this dimension.

The mother goddess took a variety of different forms. Sometimes she was a snake, or a vulture, or the Moon. Each symbol represented a cycle of death, birth and regeneration: the snake hibernates, then wakes up and sheds her skin; the vulture recycles dead flesh by eating it; and the Moon dies and is reborn every 28 days, mirroring the feminine menstrual cycle.

Moon worship was very highly advanced in megalithic times. It has recently been recognised that temples such as Stonehenge were originally built to glorify the Moon as well as the Sun. Every month, shafts of moonlight line up perfectly with gaps in the massive stones, the architects having positioned them precisely to accommodate the subtly shifting patterns of the Moon’s rising and setting cycles, that repeat themselves exactly every 18.6 years. The full moon has had historic and religious significance going back thousands of years, since it was by the light of the full moon that many hunter-gathering tribes hunted, providing the best opportunities for a good catch.
